The Story Behind the Piece

There are moments in life when we know exactly where we are going.

And there are others when all we can do is walk.

For generations, the Santo Niño de Atocha has been carried in the hearts, homes, prayers, pockets, and journeys of those who believe that Jesus does not remain distant from us in our suffering.

He comes near.

Unlike images of Christ seated upon a throne, the Santo Niño is depicted as a little pilgrim dressed and ready for the road.

According to an old devotional tradition originating in Spain, a mysterious Child appeared to bring food and water to Christian prisoners whose families could not reach them. The Child came to be identified in popular devotion with the Child Jesus.

And so began an image of Christ that generations would come to love:

Jesus on the road.
Jesus bringing what is needed.
Jesus finding His people.

The devotion eventually crossed the ocean and took particularly deep root in Mexico. At Plateros, Zacatecas, devotion to the Santo Niño flourished, especially during the nineteenth century, and the sanctuary became an important destination for pilgrims. Today, thousands of ex-votos, small testimonies of gratitude left by people for favors they attribute to the Santo Niño, preserve generations of prayers, struggles and thanksgiving.
