The Hour of Prayer

Vintage Gethsemane Devotional

One found piece. One unknown history. One timeless reminder to pray.

There are things we search for, and there are things that seem to be waiting to be found.

I discovered this little devotional unexpectedly in a vintage thrift shop on a day when I had not planned to be there. I don’t usually go out alone simply to wander through places like this, but that day I did and among everything in the shop, this tiny image of Jesus caught my attention.

Perhaps it was simply coincidence. But to me, its message arrived at exactly the right moment: go alone and pray.

The image depicts Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, based on German artist Heinrich Hofmann’s Christ in Gethsemane, a celebrated work dating to the late nineteenth century. Sources commonly date the painting to around 1890, and historical records show that reproductions of the image were produced in numerous sizes and formats for devotional use.

Hofmann portrays Christ in one of the most intimate moments of the Gospel: alone in Gethsemane, before His arrest, praying to the Father. The rocky landscape emphasizes the severity of the moment, while the thorn bush in the foreground has historically been interpreted as foreshadowing the crown of thorns that awaits Him. 

It is the image of prayer when prayer is needed most.

And perhaps that is why this little piece spoke so strongly to me.

Jesus Himself withdrew to pray. In His hour of anguish, He went before the Father. Gethsemane reminds us that prayer is not reserved for moments when everything is peaceful. Sometimes prayer is what carries us through the moments when we don’t know what comes next.

A Treasure From the King

I don’t know who owned this little devotional before me.

I don’t know which home it hung in, who looked at it, or how many years it has survived. And although its aged construction suggests that it may be several decades old, its exact age and manufacturer are unknown, so I don’t want to give it a history that cannot be proven.

But its wear is real.

The aged backing, small metal fasteners, wooden oval frame, old glass and beautifully faded image remain part of the piece as I found it.

And I like to imagine something we can never document: how many prayers might have been whispered in front of this image throughout its life?

How many times might someone have looked at Jesus in Gethsemane while carrying something difficult of their own?

That unknown history is part of its beauty.

Now it has been found again not restored into something new, but preserved as something that has already lived a life.

A small treasure from the King, carrying one simple reminder:

When the hour becomes difficult, go to the Father.

The Piece

An aged oval wooden devotional frame with glass protecting a sepia-toned reproduction of Christ praying in Gethsemane. The piece is vintage and pre owned and retains visible signs of age, wear, discoloration and imperfections. 

Approximate measurements: 2.6” high × 1.8” wide × 0.3” deep (6.6 × 4.6 × 0.8 cm).

Quantity: ONLY ONE.

This is the actual piece shown in the photographs. There is no second identical piece waiting in inventory. It was found once and is offered exactly as found a small, unique devotional to display somewhere special: beside a Bible, on a prayer table, in a quiet corner of the home, or anywhere you need a reminder of The Hour of Prayer.

A Final Blessing

Before being offered to its new home, The Hour of Prayer was blessed by a priest at my church.

It is offered not only as a vintage devotional piece, but as a reminder of the life of prayer it represents a quiet invitation to step away from the noise, come before God, and speak with Him.

May the home that receives it always have a place for prayer.
